Is buying a motorcycle too risky? (this is a question for experienced motorcyclists)?

I'm 17 years old and lately i've been considering buying a motorbike instead of buying a car because 1) motorbikes cost less and also get better miles to the gallon 2) motorbikes have cheaper insurance 3) Lessons and tests all together cost less than getting driving lessons in a car My parents are afraid of me getting a motorcycle because they knew someone who was in an accident and had to have their legs amputated. now i can sympathize with their fear of me getting hurt but to be honest riding a motorcycle is no more dangerous than crossing the road. also i don't really plan on doing anything dumb on the bike like riding on an icy road at 1am with no head lights, its only going to be really a way for me to get from one place to another. So what do you think is getting a bike too risky? and if not then how should i convince my parents to let me have one?
